When talking with Cal Poly students, ice cream was mentioned the most as their favorite sweet treat.
From fluffy donuts to fruity bobas, San Luis Obispo has a lot to offer when it comes to sweet treats. People all over social media have normalized commemorating life moments with sweet confections.

According to Spoon University, an online food publication, “‘getting a sweet little treat’ is used as a study break, a pick-me-up, and sometimes just a way of powering through the day.”

To understand more about the popularity of sweet treats, I asked individuals throughout campus what their favorite places to get dessert are in San Luis Obispo, and these are the top five answers.

SLO FroYo, downtown San Luis Obispo
SLO FroYo was the most common suggestion among students. Along with frozen yogurt, FroYo sells ice cream and Italian ice dessert. Students have great things to say about the blend of flavors and wide variety of toppings. It is also an affordable treat at 89 cents an ounce, which makes it a fan favorite. If you ask students about the place to get ice cream or a treat, nine out of 10 would suggest SLO FroYo.

Sweet Bar, Vista Grande Dining Pavilion
Students who live on campus love getting their favorite desserts at the Sweet Bar, located next to Streats in the Vista Grande Dining Pavilion. The Sweet Bar offers many options for students, such as gelato, tiramisu, cupcakes, and vegan desserts. Students are able to use their PolyCard to pay, making it a more affordable option for Mustangs who do not want to use money outside of their dining plan. The proximity to the dorms also makes it a popular place to enjoy a sweet treat late at night.

Milk In It Boba Tea, Foothill Blvd.
Milk In It is the spot in SLO for all of the best milk teas and bobas. With a wide variety of different beverages, they offer classic bubble teas, smoothies, blended coffees, and creamy milkshakes. If drinks aren’t your jam, they also have mochi waffles, soft serve, and rolled ice cream.

SLO DoCo, Foothill Blvd. and Higuera St.
SLO DoCo is the fan favorite donut shop in San Luis Obispo. With over 100 options on the menu, there is a treat for everyone from a traditional glazed donut to an eccentric boysenberry cream cheese pillow donut. The two locations, one near campus and the other deeper into town make it easy for anyone to grab a donut. Students can also enjoy the ambience inside, with the dim lighting and background music, making it a great place to study. A great place for both night owls and early risers, it is open 24/7.

McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams, downtown San Luis Obispo
Finally on the list is McConnell’s ice cream shop downtown. You will love McConnell’s for its unique flavors like Apple Cider & Cranberry Jam, but they also have nailed down the classics like Mint Chip and Vanilla. With a rotating menu of limited edition flavors, there is always something new to try and love. Its easy downtown location makes it a great dessert to get after a night at the farmer’s market, dinner at Giuseppe's, or a pick-me-up after a day of exploring San Luis Obispo.
